Ithaca College will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a series of activities on Monday, September 11.
A memorial candlelighting ceremony will take place at noon in Muller Chapel, with the chapel open throughout the rest of the afternoon for those who wish to reflect on and remember the events of that day.
The college invites members of the community to gather at about 7 p.m. at the “peace pole” on the island in the Muller Chapel pond, where a candlelighting ceremony will be held at dusk.
“We would like participants to consider both what happened on that day and how things are in the world today as a result of 9/11,” said Jewish chaplain Michael Faber, an organizer of the commemoration. “In the five years since, are we any closer to peace, or are we even further away?”
The wooden peace pole was dedicated on the one-year anniversary of 9/11 in memory of those associated with the Ithaca College community who were killed in the attacks. Over 200,000 such poles have been installed in over 180 countries. Standing about eight feet tall, it is inscribed with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight languages: English, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, Swahili, and Seneca.
Following that ceremony, sometime after 8:00 p.m., the Ithaca College Republicans student group will hold its annual candlelight vigil at the Dillingham Center fountains. Members of the group will make remarks, and participants are invited to share their thoughts as well.
As has been tradition each year, in a symbolic display representative of the World Trade Center towers, only the two center Dillingham Center fountains will be turned on throughout the day.
