One of the nation’s premier military ensembles, the United States Coast Guard Band, will perform at Ithaca College on Friday, September 15. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Though the performance is free, tickets are required. To obtain tickets in advance, visit the Ticket Center at Clinton House, 116 Cayuga St., in Ithaca, or call (607) 273-4497 or (800) 284-8422. Concertgoers may also obtain tickets at the door.
Under the direction of Lt. Kenneth W. Megan, the program will feature sparkling transcriptions of Gershwin’s “Cuban Overture” and Tchaikovsky’s “Autumn Dream,” as well as Holst’s classic masterpiece for winds, the “First Suite in E-Flat.” Chief Musician Jonathan Towne, a 1978 Ithaca College School of Music graduate, will perform the clarinet solo in Debussy’s “Premier Rhapsody,” and Musician 1st Class Lisa Taylor will sing a Cole Porter medley. Chief Warrant Officer Richard E. Wyman will lead the band in Ewazen’s “A Hymn for the Lost and the Living,” a moving remembrance of the victims of the September 11th tragedy and a tribute to their families.
