The Department of Physics will open its new Performance-Based Physics Laboratory on Friday, Oct. 13. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 208 in the Center for Natural Sciences. Housing 11 round tables each equipped with audio, data, electrical outlets and Mac Powerbooks, the new facility allows students to create their own learning communities for three- to nine-person teams.

The inauguration of the new classroom will feature remarks by Howard Erlich, dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, and a demonstration of the new facility’s technology by assistant professor of physics Michael “Bodhi” Rogers. In addition, Eric Leibensperger ’05 will give a talk, “Atmospheric Physics and Global Warming,” which focuses on his current research at Harvard University.

“Constructed last summer, faculty members in the physics department supervised the complete renovation of existing space to create an innovative classroom in which to teach physics,” said Matthew C. Sullivan, assistant professor of physics. “Studies have shown that this new teaching methodology will help students to better understand the concepts behind the physics as well as enhance their problem-solving skills.”
