Junior and senior H&S students with outstanding academic records and financial aid eligibility are invited to apply for the Fred L. Emerson Humanities Collaboration Award that supports faculty/student collaboration on scholarly projects in the Humanities. The deadline to submit a formal proposal for spring semester projects is November 3.

Although students and faculty in the natural sciences routinely work together on research projects, students and faculty in the Humanities at IC do not always think about how they can work together on faculty members’ scholarly projects, whether research, manuscript editing, or course development. This award encourages both students and faculty to explore such possible collaborative opportunities. The potential rewards are high on both sides. Students are able to make a significant contribution to scholarship, to learn and apply the knowledge and skills they have been developing in their coursework, and in the process deepen their own understanding of what it really means to do scholarly work in the humanities. At the same time, faculty members can make significant progress on their own scholarly endeavors with the support of a first-rate student assistant, and in this way, help to prepare the next generation of scholars. The Award offers a stipend of up to $2,500 to enable student recipients to devote time and attention to the work required to succeed in such scholarly projects.

Both student applicants and their faculty mentors must submit materials as part of the proposal process. Guidelines and application forms can be found at https://www.ithaca.edu/hs/community/fundingopps/emersoncollabawards/. Formal proposals should be submitted by November 3 c/o Lynn Tordella in the H&S Dean’s Office, 201 Muller. Please note that later this academic year, there will be a separate round of proposals for projects to be undertaken in summer 2007, or during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Questions about eligibility, specific projects, or application procedures, can be addressed to Stacia Zabusky, Interim Assistant Dean, School of Humanities and Sciences (274-3409, szabusky@ithaca.edu).
