Campus-area neighborhoods and conflict:
Solutions and resources
Tuesday, Oct. 24th, 7-8:30 p.m.
Africana Studies and Research Center
310 Triphammer Road//Bus line and parking
"Are you telling me if I have a problem with a landlord and my apartment that's falling apart, the city might help, let alone care?"
"The students have no consideration for year-round residents, and no clue about when to put out garbage or recyclables."
"The cops just look at us like a cash cow and are writing noise tickets walking up the porch."
"I'm scared if I complain about a student neighbor, that there will be retribution."
Comments like this are common on and around area campuses. To address some of these issues, and share ideas and resources, the Campus-Community Coalition is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
The session will be held at Cornell's Africana Studies and Research Center, 310 Triphammer Road, from 7 to 8:30 p.m on Oct. 24. There is on-site parking and a TCAT stop at Africana.
City of Ithaca Police Chief Lauren Signer, Tompkins County Sheriff Peter Meskill, elected officials, students, neighbors and landlords are scheduled to attend. (And the snacks will be great, too.)
The Coalition, a joint initiative of Ithaca College, Cornell University and Tompkins Cortland Community College, holds regular forums on myriad issues, ranging from local laws to landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities. Over the years, the group has organized meetings with top campus and community law enforcement officials, the State Liquor Authority, campus vice presidents and deans, and lots of students and neighbors.
The Oct. 24th session will revolve around conflict resolution and resource sharing in campus-area neighborhoods. The goal of the forum, facilitated by the Community Dispute Resolution Center (CDRC), will be to address challenges and misconceptions involving off-campus students and year-round residents.
Please contact Priscilla Quirk (274-3136) or Bob Holt (274-3333) if you have any questions about this event or are interested in becoming involved in the Campus Communith Coalition.
