The Tompkins-Cortland County chapter of Habitat for Humanity has joined forces with the Cornell University and Ithaca College campus Habitat chapters to build the frame of a house that will be transported to Harrison County, Mississippi. Operation: Home Delivery has provided families affected by Hurricane Katrina a new home in the Habitat tradition, while using volunteer labor from across the country. Community volunteers are welcome in the Lowe’s parking lot on Saturday, October 28th, from 10am to 5pm. No advance volunteer sign up is required.
In addition to the build, a family friendly atmosphere will be created to raise awareness about the Habitat for Humanity organization. A DJ will provide background entertainment, children will have the opportunity to make Habitat magnets and participate in mini-building projects with Lowe’s and Michaels, and the Cornell Global Village project will be selling food and refreshments. Courtside Racquet and Fitness will be sponsoring a “One Hit Club Contest” and there will be a raffle to win a Kawasaki ATV valued at $3200.
It is fitting that this unique collaborative effort is to take place on National Make a Difference Day. Shannon Colleen Wheeler, member of the Tompkins County Habitat for Humanity board stated, “This is a really exciting opportunity for us to connect the Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Tompkins-Cortland Habitat Chapters while reviving Habitat in our own community. As we bring ourselves together, we’re also connecting to a much needier Habitat in the South that still lacks the resources and manpower to recover from last fall’s natural disaster.”
Operation Home Delivery is Habitat for Humanity International’s response to the destruction caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. While Habitat for Humanity cannot be the answer to all low-income housing needs created by the hurricanes, Habitat expects to assist thousands of people and to work together in partnership with other organizations to serve as a catalyst in the rebuilding process.
