Rebecca F. Plante(Sociology) will discuss her research 'HOOKING UP' ON CAMPUS; SEX IN THE LITTLE CITY sponsored by the Bronfenbrenner Life Course Center (BLCC) on Thursday November 30, 2006, 12:00-1:30, 114 MVR Hall, Cornell University Campus.

This talk will describe preliminary findings from mixed method research on undergraduate students' experiences with dating, romantic, and sexual relationships(often called "hooking up"). A heterosexual "hook up" is generally defined by students as a situation in which a man and a woman meet spontaneously, rather than by pre-arranged date, and something sexual then occurs(though it may not be intercourse). Using semi-structured interviews and surveys, Plante explores common sexual practices and the value and meaning these practices have to students. One major focus is how male and female students evaluate current relational forms (such as dating, "hanging out," and/or "hooking up"). Does this new social form suggest that we now have a social scene that no longer stigmatizes women's sexual experience more than men's? Or are women stigmatized more than men if they "hook up" too much? Do men and women enjoy hook ups equally? Are women more interested in relationships than men? What is the role of feelings in these encounters? What gender norms govern behavior on hook ups?
