The demolition of portions of the Green Street Parking Garage has been scheduled to begin on December 1, 2006. Vehicular traffic will be detoured around the 100 block of East Green Street during the demolition of the bridge and portions of the double helix on the south side of Green Street. This detour will be in effect from 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 1, 2006 to 7:00 a.m., on Monday, December 4, 2006. To ensure the safety of the public, only construction and emergency vehicles will be able to access the 100 block of East Green Street during this period.

Green Street traffic will be detoured to South Cayuga Street, East Clinton Street, Prospect Street, and South Aurora Street returning to
Rt. 79/East State Street. Eastbound, Route 79 through traffic could encounter possible delays, and alternate routes are available.

TCAT bus service will be temporarily relocated from Green Street to the 200 block of South Cayuga Street from December 1—4, 2006.

In order to minimize the inconvenience to the traveling public and downtown business owners and residents, the contractor will begin the demolition of the bridges on a Friday evening and will work continuously until the structures have been removed.

We expect that this project may draw a number of spectators. In order to accommodate this, the City of Ithaca will establish a safe, spectator viewing area in the parking lot next to the Tompkins County Public Library. While we expect that the bridge will be taken down overnight Friday, the demolition of the helix will continue through Saturday.

During the demolition project, rubber mats and steel plates will be placed down to protect the street surface. Pieces of heavy equipment will hold the large pieces of concrete in place while the concrete is broken into smaller pieces that will fall to the ground.
