Aetna’s Flexible Spending Account AutoDebit and Streamline Features

Are you enrolled in the Aetna Open Access POS II medical plan and have an Aetna Healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA)? If so you may have noticed that Aetna has made reimbursements from your FSA easier and more convenient. The Benefits Department has received a lot of positive feedback about these features, and we want to be certain that everyone is aware of them.

Aetna’s AutoDebit feature has your prescription drug out-of-pocket costs automatically drawn directly from your FSA balance and paid to the pharmacy when you fill a prescription at an in-network pharmacy.

Additionally, Streamlining automatically passes eligible health care expenses processed by Aetna to your FSA, eliminating the need for you to submit a claim form for reimbursement of most out-of-pocket expenses. In other words, Aetna assumes the member has paid their out-of-pocket expenses directly to the Health Care provider, so in turn, the member will automatically be reimbursed from their health care spending account.

We also want to remind members that if you or your dependents have secondary coverage under another non-Aetna health plan, you are covering a domestic partner who is not a dependent for federal income tax purposes or you have joined the Health Care FSA plan for reimbursement of orthodontia expenses you should not participate in the Streamline / AutoDebit options. IRS guidelines mandate that your Health Care FSA be the last plan considered for payment of benefits.

For employees who are in the Shared Family situation (both spouses/qualified domestic partners work at the College), please note whoever is the primary medical account holder is able to have the AutoDebit and Streamline features on their account, however; any claims to be paid against the secondary holder’s FSA will have to be manually submitted.

If you want or need to opt out of the AutoDebit / Streamline features, you may do so in the following ways:
- Contact Aetna Flexible Spending Account customer service at 1-877-392-3862.
- Visit the Aetna Navigator member website at www.aetna.com (the streamline claims options is under the “Claims and Balances” section.)

As a reminder, while on Aetna Navigator, you may also:
- View your FSA claims
- Review your current FSA account balances and activity
- Use the FSA Advisor to project savings
- Access the list of items approved by the IRS for FSA reimbursement

- Print and complete the Streamline/Aetna AutoDebit Cancellation form found on the web at https://www.ithaca.edu/hr/pdf/benefits/aetna/aetna-fsa-streamline-cancel2007.pdf.
- Complete the cancellation form available from the Benefits Department and return it to Aetna.

Please keep in mind that a cancellation pertains to claims for any person linked to the Primary FSA including the Primary participant, future claims will need to be submitted manually.

For any additional questions regarding the above referenced features, please call Aetna FSA customer service at 1-877-392-3862 or contact the Benefits Department at 274-3245.
