How can thousands of fireflies on Malaysian riverbanks flash in unison? Find out from Steven Strogatz, who will lecture on "Synchrony" at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, in CNS 112.

Strogatz, a professor in Cornell University's Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics, studies how large systems synchronize themselves, from flowing electrons to the heart's pacemaker cells. This new science has applications in the study of such diverse phenomena as traffic jams, mass hysteria, and consciousness itself. The talk is sponsored by the Humanities and Sciences Honors Program.
