The City of Ithaca has requested that Ithaca College notify the campus community that a snow emergency has been declared. This will subject cars parked on certain city streets to towing. The following announcement was distributed by the city:
In anticipation of a heavy snowfall as predicted by the National Weather Service, Mayor Carolyn K. Peterson declared a snow emergency effective 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, that will remain in effect until further notice. This declaration shall activate the designated Snow Emergency Routes and make it unlawful to park or stand a motor vehicle, except for the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers, upon any portion of any of the emergency snow routes listed during this period of time:
Albany Street--Cascadilla Street to Elmira Road
Aurora Street--Court Street to E. Seneca Street
Cayuga Street--North City Line to South Titus Avenue
College Avenue--Oak Avenue to Mitchell Street
Court Street--North Cayuga Street to Linn Street
Green Street--Meadow Street to East State Street
Ithaca Road--Mitchell Street to Dryden Road
Lincoln Street--North Cayuga Street to North Tioga Street
Seneca Street--West State Street to East State Street
State Street--Floral Avenue to North Meadow Street
State Street--East Green Street to East City Line
Tioga Street--Lincoln Street to King Street
Vehicles that are parked on these designated routes are subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Please look for available parking on a nearby street and remember to follow the odd-even parking regulation, as that will help to facilitate our snow removal efforts. Parking is also available in the Seneca Street, Cayuga Street, and Dryden Road Parking Garages with regular parking rates in effect.
Property owners are reminded of their responsibilities to clear the full, paved width of sidewalks and curb-cuts on their property of snow and ice within 24 hours of the beginning of a snowfall. If sidewalks are not cleared in a timely manner, the city may clear the sidewalk and bill the property owner for the service. In addition, it is unlawful to throw or place snow upon the city streets or upon another parcel of land without the property owner’s consent. It is important that fire hydrants remain clear of snow so that firefighters have quick access to them when needed.
The Department of Public Works will work hard to maintain traffic circulation throughout the city and will give snow removal priority to the designated emergency snow routes and the major streets and hills. Collector streets, residential streets, and cul-de-sacs will follow. The designated emergency pedestrian routes are as follows:
Primary – East-West Route - Buffalo Street from Meadow to Eddy Street
North-South Route - Cayuga Street - High School to Clinton Street
Secondary – East-West - Clinton Street – Meadow Street to Cayuga Street
North-South - Albany Street - Cascadilla to Spencer Road
One side of these streets will be cleared by the Department of Public Works, once, at no charge to the property owners.
In case of an emergency, please call 911.
