Ithaca Mayor Carolyn K. Peterson has announced that the Snow Emergency that was declared for the city on Feb. 13 has officially been cancelled effective at 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Residents may resume parking on the designated snow emergency routes. She has asked that Ithaca College distribute the following statement to the campus community:
“I would like to thank all of the city residents who assisted with snow removal efforts by following the odd/even and 24-hour parking regulations, snow emergency routes, and for making sure their sidewalks were cleared. Compliance with these regulations is critical during snow events such as the one we just experienced. The snow plow operators need your continued support, as their efforts have been hampered in some areas due to illegally parked cars” stated Mayor Peterson.
The City will be strictly enforcing the odd/even parking regulation and the 24-hour parking regulation so that the streets can be adequately cleared of snow. In addition, streets throughout the City will periodically be posted as “No Parking” zones. College Avenue will be one of the first streets that will be posted for no parking on Saturday, February 17, 2007. Once the street has been cleared, the signs will be removed and parking can be resumed. Vehicles that are not in compliance with these parking regulations will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. City-wide snow removal efforts are expected to take 1-2 weeks.
Public Safety Messages: The Department of Public Works asks parents and guardians to be especially vigilant and not allow children to play in, or walk on, snow piles next to the street. Snow plow operators are working hard to clear the streets, and may not be able to see children who are hidden by the snow.
The Ithaca Fire Department asks residents to clear snow away from fire hydrants so that they are easily identified and accessible when firefighters need to hook up to them.
Property owners in the City are reminded of their responsibilities to clear the full, paved width of sidewalks and curb-cuts on their property of snow and ice within 24 hours of the beginning of a snowfall. If sidewalks are not cleared in a timely manner, the City may clear the sidewalk and bill the property owner for the service. In addition, it is unlawful to throw or place snow upon the City streets or upon another parcel of land without the property owner’s consent.
“The City of Ithaca has one of the highest percentages of pedestrians in the Country. It is important that we all work together to clear the sidewalks and provide access to important pedestrian routes” stated Mayor Peterson.
