As a send-off to a March performance tour of Ireland, the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble, conducted by Stephen Peterson, will present a free concert on Wednesday, March 7. This preview of the wind ensemble's Irish program will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Entitled "An American Tapestry," the performance will feature Copland’s "Outdoor Overture," Bennett’s "Suite of Old American Dances," and works by Ticheli, Grantham, Lauridsen and Sousa.
While in Ireland, the wind ensemble will perform in Clonmel, Limerick, Dublin, and Cork as well as visit the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, and Blarney Castle. Collaborating with the School of Music on this tour are the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Banna Chluain Meala, the Cork School of Music and the Dublin Concert Band.
The Ithaca College Wind Ensemble was founded in 1981 and is the School of Music’s premier wind band. Following in the rich tradition of Patrick Conway and Walter Beeler, the ensemble, conducted by Stephen Peterson, presents some 10 concerts annually, both on and off campus, including such venues as the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
Through a demanding schedule of concerts, tours and recordings, the ensemble has developed a broad reputation for performing excellence, innovative programming and commitment to new music. Concert programs include a wide variety of music including wind band classics, chamber works from a variety of historic periods, new commissions, and those newer works that serve to expand the evolving repertoire for the wind ensemble.
