Daylight Saving Time Change – Updates May Be Needed

03/02/07

As you’ve probably heard, new Daylight Saving Time dates go into effect starting in 2007. Given that many software and hardware products use a timestamp in some way, those products generally need some type of update in order to operate correctly when DST goes into effect on March 11th.

ITS has already taken the necessary steps to patch our main systems and servers, as well as college-owned desktop computers (also see related story), to ensure that servers and desktop machines adjust for DST on the correct dates.

However, the DST changes may have an impact on other technology that is used on campus. Does your area use specialized software or hardware that is not provided by ITS? If so, you should check with the manufacturer to find out if any patches or updates are necessary to allow the software/hardware to recognize the new DST dates.

Also, users of handheld devices (i.e. PDAs and organizers) should check with the product manufacturer to find out what, if any, steps need to be taken to update the device or its software.

While not necessarily a repeat of Y2K, the DST changes do have the potential to cause problems with software and systems that are not patched by March 11th, 2007.
