Amanda Smith, Jenna Englund, Jacklyn Brisson, and Kaitlin Sweeney, students in Srijana Bajracharya's Development and Evaluation of Health Promotion class, presented their service learning research project, "A Community Assessment on Nutritional Health: A Service Learning Project" at the American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) national convention in Baltimore on March 16.
The purpose of the study was to assist a community health initiative through a service learning project that was integrated into their health education course. The project focused on determining nutritional status of individuals living in a small central New York community, such as perceived health status, food buying, and food intake behaviors.
Primary data from the community were compared to county, state, and national averages to examine the status of the local community. Secondary data were gathered from available government documents.
Based on the findings, a set of recommendations for the further scientific research, healthy nutrition intake for the community, and strategies for service learning projects for college and university students were provided.
