Sergeant/Investigator Thomas Dunn was selected by the Office of Public Safety as the Ithaca Kiwanis Club Officer of the Month for April. In August 1984, Tom entered Ithaca College as a first-year student majoring in business. While attending IC he became an active member of Public Safety's student auxiliary safety patrol. Upon Tom’s graduation in May 1988, he continued as a part-time worker until being hired as a full-time security officer that August. Tom was promoted to patrol officer in September 1990 and to the rank of sergeant in September 1997. In September 2001, Tom was promoted to the rank of sergeant/investigator.
Over the past 19 years, Tom’s work ethic and job performance have been second to none. He continually serves as a mentor to all co-workers, including not only subordinates but supervisors as well. Even though Tom is a plainclothes sergeant/investigator, most recently he volunteered on several occasions to fill in for several months at a time as a uniformed patrol supervisor when the office was short-staffed. He continually presents innovative ideas and programs for the efficiency and advancement of the department.
Since 2000, Tom has assisted the systems administrator of Public Safety’s Automated Records Management System in maximizing the data capabilities of the computer system for the benefit of patrol operations and time efficiency. He assists the associate director with the federally mandated annual reporting of crime statistics to the Department of Education. Tom is currently working with the Office of Judicial Affairs on Judicial Action, a computer program that will allow officers to electronically send judicial referrals to the Office of Judicial Affairs, thus avoiding a lengthy and paper-intensive report-writing process.
Tom is a current member of the Tompkins County Crisis Intervention Negotiation Team and recently attended the Crisis Intervention Officer Training Course. Tom is a past recipient of the Officer of the Month Award, in April 1992.
