An interdisciplinary team comprised of current and former IC faculty has published a special 35-page dossier on the Within Our Gates archival film and live music project at Ithaca College in the The Moving Image: The Journal of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, the international journal for film historians, theorists, and archivists.
The special dossier includes scholarly historical and theoretical research articles by Patricia Zimmermann, professor of cinema, photography and media arts (CPMA) and codirector of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival; former television-radio (TVR) faculty member John Hochheimer; former CPMA faculty members Grace An and Anna Siomopoulos; and digital images by former CPMA faculty member Simon Tarr. The spoken-word script for the performance was also published, as well as an interview with the composer, jazz musician Fe Nunn, describing the creative process for the project.
The Within Our Gates project, which spanned the 2003-2004 academic year, was an interdisciplinary collaborative project to create a new live music score and spoken word performance for the 1920 Oscar Micheaux silent film, Within Our Gates. The collaborative research and performance project was mounted to celebrate Black History Month in 2004 and featured a new score
by Fe Nunn.
The Within Our Gates project was a special collaborative project jointly supported by the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, with additional support from the Roy H. Park School of Communications and the School of Music.
