On Monday, April 23, the students of a new Ithaca College seminar titled “Witnessing Injustice under Occupation” will begin sharing how the lives of millions are impacted, disrupted and destroyed while under occupation by foreign militaries. Through a series of moving and informative events, these 11 students have assumed the roles and responsibilities of witnesses.

Dylan Richardson and Preston Clinton will reveal the hidden costs of military occupations in Iraq and the Palestinian territories to the American people through popular media, video clips and commercials. This project, labeled “Occupation: Are You Buying it?” will communicate to its audience the consequences of their tax dollars. Contact Preston Clinton, pclinto1@ithaca.edu for times and locations.

Saturday, April 28 at 11 a.m. participants in the 5-k benefit, “Feet for Future Land,” will be taking steps toward a better future by raising money for the Save Gaza project. This project supports the efforts of local Gazans to create sustainable gardens. Students Alison Reesman, Kim Nesta and Caitlyn Whitehead are not only raising money for this cause but are also informing the community about the issues of sustainability under occupation. The IC Environmental Society is cosponsoring this benefit. To register for the 5-k,email areesma1@ithaca.edu.

“Voices from Iraq” can be heard on Monday, April 30 at 7 p.m. in the Klingenstein Lounge at Ithaca College. Kim Miner, Caitlin Hayes and Mary Murphy have developed a dramatic presentation based on their correspondence with both U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. The IC Students for a Just Peace are cosponsoring this event.

A large mural, “Occupation: Eyes of the Artist,” will show the effects of occupation on the Palestinian People using art, maps and statistics. Sarah Forbes, Jennifer Traylor and Matthew Kopera explain, “The artists are speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.” The mural will be on display at the other events.

This seminar is taught by Professor Beth Harris of the Ithaca College Politics Department and is designed to address the legal political, military and social aspects of occupations in the Middle East. Anyone interested in these issues is encouraged to stop by any of these events as a participant or observer.
