Men's and Women's Tennis Teams off to NCAA Championships for First Time

The NCAA has announced pairings for the 2007 Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. The Bomber men's team will face Southern Maine Friday, May 4 in a regional quarterfinal hosted by Middlebury. Ithaca's women's team takes on Simmons Friday, May 4 in a regional quarterfinal at Bowdoin.

On the men's side, fourth-seeded Ithaca (9-12) meets fifth-seeded Southern Maine (6-2) in the opening round with the winner to face the top-seeded host Panthers (18-1) in one of Saturday's regional semifinals; second-seeded Amherst (13-5) plays third-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology (9-5) in the other with the semifinal winners squaring off Sunday in the regional final.

In women's competition, the Bombers (10-6) open play against Simmons (14-5); the winner moves on to Saturday's regional semifinal roung to take on host Bowdoin (17-2). Friday's other regional quarterfinal pits Bard (8-2) against Vassar (15-5) with the winner advancing to play Middlebury (11-4) in Saturday's regional semifinal. The regional title match is slated for Sunday.

Match times and ticket information will be announced by the host school Tuesday.

Both Bomber teams earned automatic bids to the national tournament by winning the Empire 8 Championship Tournament. This was the first year that the conference champion received an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

Both Bomber teams are making their first NCAA Championship appearance. Ithaca is the first Empire 8 school to qualify for either NCAA tennis tournament.
