As of Monday, 6/18/2007 email programs that are using the POP protocol to access Ithaca College email accounts will no longer be able to connect.
POP is a protocol which operates by connecting to an email server, downloading new messages to the local computer, and then deleting the messages from the server. POP is being disabled in favor of IMAP, which is the protocol used by the vast majority of Ithaca College email users. IMAP is designed to keep email messages on the email server, thereby making those messages accessible at all times, from any computer connected to the Internet. An added benefit of using IMAP is that email messages are backed up on a nightly basis.
Only a very small number of Ithaca College email users (about 2%) access their email through a POP connection. ITS will be contacting those users directly with additional information.
