Spam Trap has been in use on the IC email servers since 2003 to successfully tag and reject untold numbers of spam email messages.
Spam Trap has previously offered 3 spam scanning options: Minimal scanning, a tag option, and a reject option. Due to the ever-increasing numbers of spam messages that the IC email servers process on a daily basis, all IC email accounts will now be required to use the "Tag" option as the minimum spam-scanning option. Any accounts that are currently set for minimal scanning will automatically be converted to the “Tag" option after Fix-it-Friday on 9/14/07. Users of these accounts will simply notice that some of their email messages now show “[SPAM*****]” at the beginning of the message subject.
By requiring all accounts to use "Tag" as the minimum scanning level, ITS can get more accurate statistics about how spam impacts the IC email servers, which will help us to continue to improve the effectiveness of Spam Trap.
For more information about using Spam Trap to reduce email spam see our guide (pdf).
