Please join us from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 6 in the Handwerker Gallery for the opening reception for “Equal Rights: Reggae and Social Change," currently on display in the Gallery. Acoustic Reggae for the opening reception will be performed by local singer/songwriter Shaka.
A traveling exhibition curated by Herbie Miller, Josh Chamberlain and Catherine Amidon and organized by Plymouth State University, Equal Rights presents social history through Jamaican art and music and engages social discourse on culture and social change. The exhibition documents how visual, musical and vocal artists from the Jamaican Diaspora have addressed social and political issues in America and the wider international arena.
The exhibition runs through October 14 and will be accompanied by a lecture and a gallery talk by Reggae historian and curator Herbie Miller, as well as a Reggae Night in the Gallery. These events are cosponsored by the Ithaca College School of Business, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the School of Music, and the Center for the Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity.
The Handwerker Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; and Saturday & Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. All Gallery events are free and open to the public. See www.ithaca.edu/handwerker or contact Cheryl Kramer, Gallery Director, at 274-3548 for further details.
