Award-winning essayist and novelist Scott Russell Sanders will give two public presentations at Ithaca College as part of the Distinguished Visiting Writers Series, hosted by the Department of Writing. Sanders will deliver a lecture, titled "Honoring the Ordinary," on Tuesday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Klingenstein Lounge, Egbert Hall. On Thursday, September 27, he will give a reading from his works at 7:30 p.m. in Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.
Sanders is the author of 19 books, including eight works of fiction and seven storybooks for children. In all of his writings, Sanders is concerned with our place in nature, the pursuit of social justice, the character of community and the search for a spiritual path. His 2006 book, A Private History of Awe, is a coming-of-age memoir, love story, and spiritual testament.
For his collected work in nonfiction, Sanders was honored in 1995 with the Lannan Literary Award. His writings have also been selected for The Best American Essays, the Kenyon Review Award for Literary Excellence, the PEN Syndicated Fiction Award, and the John Burroughs Essay Award.
He has taught since 1971 at Indiana University, where he is Distinguished Professor of English. He has served as writer in residence at Phillips Exeter Academy and as a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lilly Endowment, and the Guggenheim Foundation.
