On Monday, October 1, composting started in the IC Square.
Resource Environmental Management Program (REMP) and Ithaca Dining Services teamed up to begin working toward making the IC Square compostable with the purchase of biodegradable cutlery and containers, which have been in use since the beginning of the semester.
There will be three compost bins placed throughout IC Square, replacing the current trash bins. Students and faculty will be able to compost just about anything. Such items consist of food scraps, napkins, straws, paper cups, and all Smart Market containers. There will be a large tri-fold bulletin on display over the new compost bins, explaining what is compostable and what should be thrown in the trash.
Composting is the biological decomposition of organic material to produce a soil-like substance called humus (the rich dark part of soil that makes plant thrive). By composting food waste and other organic products, this solid waste is recycled and reused, rather than stored for decades in a landfill.
