A new interdisciplinary course for freshmen & sophomores, Media Literacy & Popular Culture, is being offered through the department of Culture & Communication in DIIS, taught by Cyndy Scheibe from the dept. of psychology.

While the course is not yet listed in the catalogue, it is listed in the schedule of courses in Homer. The course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of media literacy (the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of forms), with an emphasis on the changing role of media in education and popular culture, and their effects on beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. Both popular and educational media will be investigated, including television, film, print media, popular music, video games, and the Internet. Students will be challenged to think critically about information from different media sources, both in their coursework and in their personal lives, and will learn basic media literacy skills, including communicating effectively using different media formats.

CLTC 11000-01 (1 SS LA, 3 credits) will be held MWF 12-12:50 in Williams 323. It will be taught by Cyndy Scheibe, assoc. professor of psychology and executive director of Project Look Sharp, Ithaca College's media literacy initiative (www.ithaca.edu/looksharp).
