With its 48-21 win at Springfield last Saturday, October 27, the Ithaca College Bomber football squad improved its record to 6-2 and clinched the program's 37th straight winning season. That streak is the second-longest active stretch at any level of college football. (Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, recently secured its 52nd straight winning season).
The Bombers have finished above .500 every year since 1971 under the direction of head coaches Jim Butterfield (a member of the College Football Hall of Fame) and current coach Mike Welch (a former team captain and assistant coach under Butterfield).
Included in that 37-year span are three national championships, seven Stagg Bowl appearances and 15 trips to the NCAA playoffs.
With two games left in the regular season, the Bombers remain in contention for another postseason berth. Ithaca hosts Alfred this Saturday, November 3, and Cortland -- in the annual Cortaca Jug game -- November 10.
