Former Sudanese refugee Abraham Awolich will speak at Ithaca College on Tuesday, November 13, at 8:00 p.m. in Williams 225. Abraham is working to bring education to both men and women southern Sudan, "one school at a time."

Abraham was a refugee for 17 years before being resettled in the U.S. He is now the co-director of the New Sudan Education Initiative, a diaspora-initiated non-profit organization building specialized secondary schools in southern Sudan. Come and hear the incredible story of a former refugee who is bringing the dream of education to Sudan and turning tragedy into hope, one school at a time.

The New Sudan Education Initiative (NESEI) is a New England and Southern Sudan-based non-profit organized by a coalition of Sudanese refugees and Americans with the long-term goal of building 20 secondary schools in Southern Sudan. NESEI was started in January 2006 in response to the utter destruction in Southern Sudan, caused by decades of civil war that have left 4.5 million people dead and created 9 million refugees since 1956. In Sudan, only 5% of all high school aged children go to secondary school and over 90% of women are illiterate. These are some of the worst education statistics in the world. NESEI is working to change these numbers.
