Art in A Box is pleased to introduce the Art in a Box Salon on Saturday, November 17, 2007, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Join us and view a portfolio of relief prints completed by international women and meet the facilitator, Patricia Hunsinger, at 463 West Street in New York City.
The portfolio focuses on a global reaction to nature and the individual's reflections on the changing environment. The project is aptly named "Women's Reflections on the Environment, A Global Compilation of Thoughts."
In this body of work, women seek to explore how the evolving and turbulent world affects the environment and how the environment in turn affects single and collective beings. Hunsinger wanted women of a conglomeration of nationalities to investigate what the word "environment" means to them and to seek to express a variety of viewpoints.
During the span of the workshop that instigated the prints, women learned how to articulate their thematic ideas using linoleum and ink. After meting out a symbolic or direct image about the environment, women were instructed in cutting the images from a linoleum block and printing them on archival paper. Many women chose to print with very heavy ink, emphasizing the delicate empty spaces and focusing on soft curves and angular edges. This heavy black space articulates
the incredible weight that the environment has on
individuals and societies.
Each piece tells an intimate story, and many provide abstract images that continue to expand with meaning the closer the observer comes to understanding what each woman is saying about herself and the environment she lives in. The result is a collection of pieces that manage to cohesively represent a global opinion while also describing an intimate reaction to life and the changing world.
The exhibition will include unique pieces by women
from the United States, Cambodia, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. Each piece is a black-and-white relief print, but no two pieces are the same. Each shines with its own peerless image.
Patricia Hunsinger was born in central New York and lives and works in the area. She has been teaching at Ithaca College since 2002. She has facilitated and been a part of numerous portfolios and exhibitions within the country and
