Documentary filmmaker Omar Majeed and author Michael Muhammad Knight will be presenting on Taqwacore, a Muslim punk rock movement, from 7:00-9:00pm on Monday, November 26, 2007 in Williams 323.
In 2002, Michael Muhammad Knight, a convert to Islam, wrote and self-published The Taqwacores, a fictional account of a group of Muslim punks living in Buffalo, NY. Following broader distribution by the Alternative Tentacles record label, The Taqwacores was published by Autonomedia in 2004. The novel served as the inspiration for the development of an American Muslim punk rock movement calling itself Taqwacore. In 2007, Omar Majeed, an award-winning writer, director and editor based in Montreal, began filming a documentary about the Taqwacore scene that follows the first Taqwacore tour from the East Coast to Chicago.
The presentation will include a discussion about the Taqwacore movement, a screening of parts of an upcoming feature-length documentary on Taqwacore, and a question-and-answer session with Omar Majeed and Michael Muhammad Knight.
This event is sponsored by the Department of Sociology, the Department of Anthropology, and the Department of Politics.
