Important Information for Faculty: Class Materials in Alternate Format

In compliance with section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, class materials must be made available in alternate format.

Alternate formats include audio versions of written documents, documents in braille, enlarged print and documents in electronic format.

If a student in your class has identified himself/herself to the Office of Academic Support Services for Students with Disabilities, and has a substantial need for materials in alternate format, you will be notified by an e-mail from the office and/or the student's academic adjustment plan.

At that time, someone from the office will meet with you to discuss lead time and how to prepare documents (such as class handouts, syllabus, or tests) for conversion into alternate format.

Also, many textbooks are available in electronic format directly from the publishers. However, it is a great help if faculty compile reading lists as early as possible, since books from smaller publishing companies, or those not designated as textbooks, must be scanned and converted.
