In the event that a resident finds themselves lockout of their room or building, they are able to either retrieve a lock out key from the Area or Satellite Office located in the cluster of buildings they live in, or they can contact a staff member in an Area or Satellite Office (during their hours of business) or a Resident Assistant, who has the ability to gain access to keys that will allow them to key a resident into their room or their building.
Residents are not able to be keyed into a room/building or receive a lock out key if they cannot present their college ID card, or provide the college ID number. According to Ithaca College policy students should carry their ID cards at all times. In the event that a student does not have their college ID or they cannot provide their ID number, they will be escorted to their room or building by a college paraprofessional or professional staff member and keyed into their room/building. At the time they are keyed in, they need to retrieve there college ID from their room and present it to the staff member. If a student is escorted to his/her room/building and the student can not ultimately produce their Ithaca College ID Card the escort can accept a picture driver’s license and a major credit card or bank card as verification of identity.
Each residential student is given one free lock-out during each the academic semester. Following their use of their first free lock-out, each sequential time they are locked out, they are assessed a $10 fee, in order to receive a lock out key. Note: If assistance is required by a resident to gain access to their residence hall because of forgotten or lost keys, this is considered a lock-out. Residents are expected to pay the fee at the time the time of the lock-out, or in the event they require a lock-out key, at the time when they receive or return the key, if they do not pay at any of these times, the fee will billed to their student accounts as a damage bill charge. The $10 fee is applied each additional time a lockout is requested, after the first free-lock-out. In the event that a lockout key is required as a part of lost or stolen keys, the lock-out key fee waived, as the student will be responsible for paying for the recore of the room and for the additional room keys that need to be replaced as a result of the lost key. Money received as part of lock-out fee is used for residential programming by the Resident Assistants to provide students with educational and social opportunities.
The lock-out policy and lock-out fee are in place to increase a student’s awareness regarding proper management of their keys, and to raise our key control and security. Any resident receiving multiple lock-outs during the semester may be referred judicially for failure to comply with college policy. The lock-out fee and possible judicial action are in place to encourage students to be responsible and carry their keys with them at all times, thus reducing the number of lock-outs and increasing residence hall security.
