"Hiding in Plain Sight" -- a community forum on youth, sexuality, and Jewish identity -- will take place on Tuesday, April 1, as part of Ithaca College's 11th annual Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF). Free and open to the public and featuring a screening of the film, Hineini: Coming Out in a Jewish High School, the event will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Park Hall Auditorium.
Hineini is the inspiring story of Shulamit Izen's fight to establish a gay-straight alliance at a Jewish high school in the Boston area, and its transformative impact on her entire community.
Panelists for the discussion will include Rebecca Lesses, assistant professor of Jewish studies at Ithaca College; local high school and college students; and a local K-12 educator who is a passionate advocate for young people. The panel will discuss questions of camouflaging identities, sexual orientations, and religion, and will explore the challenging terrains teenagers encounter when navigating these issues.
The event is cosponsored by the Ithaca College Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services and the Jewish studies program. FLEFF 2008 will run Monday–Sunday, March 31–April 6. A complete list of events, along with a day-by-day calendar, is available at www.ithaca.edu/fleff.
