The seminar's speaker is David Statman of Allegheny College. "During the past several years, I have been investigating the physics and chemistry of nonlinear optical systems," says Professor Statman. "My current work involves studying the effects of dye structure on the dye-induced enhancement of the optical nonlinearities in liquid crystals.
"The interaction of dyes with liquid crystal samples is of much interest in chemical physics and materials science, whereas the nonlinear optical interaction of laser light with these dye-doped samples is of much interest in optical physics.
"In this talk I will discuss how photo-excitation of azo dyes leads to optical reorientation of the nematic liquid crystal director. Bulk and surface interactions will be described. This work has impact on a broad range of technologies involving communications and image reconstruction."
