Sustainably Conscious Learning Community Seeks Faculty Fellow

Are you interested in working with a dynamic and motivated group of students interested in learning more about how to live sustainably? If the answer to this question is yes, please consider serving as a faculty fellow for the Sustainably Conscious Residential Learning Community.

The Sustainably Conscious Residential Learning Community began in fall 2005 as a result of a student-initiated proposal. The program has been growing and expanding ever since. The program now fills Terrace 2 (62 students).

The program is designed to help students achieve the following learning objectives:

• Understand the necessity of lifelong sustainable living
• Understand what is required to pursue sustainable lifestyles
• Become advocates of sustainable living and to educate the campus community about sustainable living through outreach programs
• Reduce their ecological footprint
• Understand the full environmental and social costs of their purchases, and how that relates to issues of sustainability
• Appreciate the importance of community, communication, and collaboration to sustainability
• Serve as a model program for sustainable practices at Ithaca College

When the program expanded to 62 students in fall 2007, we added a second faculty fellow position. One of the two faculty fellows, Rene Borgella, fssistant professor of biology, will be returning to work with the program next year. We need to fill the other faculty fellow position.

Faculty fellows participate in the following ways:

1. Serve as members of the Sustainably Conscious Learning Community Coordinating Group, which meets biweekly to discuss programs and issues related to the community
2. Assist with planning for and attend the opening camping trip
3. Attend community dinners and town meetings every other week
4. Plan and develop a slate of academically based sustainability programs each semester. Programs might involve taking the students to an event on or off campus, arranging for a presenter to come to the community, or something the faculty member presents him/herself.

Faculty fellows must be full-time faculty members and are eligible to receive a stipend of $1,100 per year for their work with the community.
