Proper Etiquette and Tips for Networking

Be respectful of their time! When contacting someone for networking purposes, such as an alum or a family friend, do so in a respectful manner, either through e-mail or a phone call. After your initial contact, find out what method (phone, e-mail, or in person) works best for them and how often you can contact them.

Do not ask for a job, but ask for advice! When networking, do not ask for a job, but rather ask for information about a specific industry, your job search, or their career path.

Prepare questions ahead of time! If you are meeting with someone for an informational interview or job-shadowing experience, be sure to prepare a list of questions ahead of time. This way you will maximize your time and show an interest in their job and company.

Share some information about yourself! So that this is not a one-sided conversation, think about what information might be best to share, such as your year of graduation, major, or past experiences.

Dress appropriately when networking in person! Do your research on the company or meeting place to understand what attire would be appropriate. This may mean putting away your flip-flops and baseball caps!

Reread your e-mail before clicking "send"! Make sure your e-mail is professional and appropriate. Do not use slang words, IM lingo, or smiley faces, and be sure to proofread for grammatical and spelling mistakes.

Be sure to say thank you! Once you have talked or met with your new contact, be sure to send a thank you! Thanking people for their time can go a long way!
