Orchestra's Final Concert Full of Special Moments

The Chamber and Symphony Orchestras, under the baton of Jeffery Meyer, will present a free joint concert on Saturday, May 3, at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall.

There are several special features to this concert -- read on for more details.

• The symphony will premiere a new work by faculty composer Dana Wilson: "Art for Art's Sake," written to honor the career of retiring Dean Art Ostrander.

• The group will also collaborate with Minji Park, winner of the high school piano competition, on a Saint-Saens concerto.

• John Adams' "The Chairman Dances" will be performed by the symphony. Music theory professor Timothy Johnson, who has a particular interest in the work of John Adams, will give a free pre-concert lecture on this piece at 7:30 p.m. in the Iger Lecture Hall, room 2105 in the Whalen Center.

• Faculty soprano Deborah Lifton will perform Barber's "Summer of 1915" with the Chamber Orchestra.

• The program will conclude with the Chamber Orchestra performing Mendelssohn's fourth symphony, subtitled the "Italian."
