Congratulations to Beth Howland of the Office of Academic Enrichment Services!

Beth, an Ithaca alum, has been promoted from coordinator of first-year academic services to assistant director of first-year academic services and academic programs for the Office of Academic Enrichment Services, effective with the new academic year, June 1, 2008.

Academic Enrichment Services (AES) is Ithaca's academic services center and a part of the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies. This office reports to assistant provost and DIIS dean Tanya Saunders; details about AES can be found on www.ithaca.edu/aes.

Recently, Beth wrote and received approval for a proposal she submitted to the 2008-9 New Initiatives Fund. The grant will be put toward a project focused on retention of first-year students.

Beth has distinguished herself during her first year at Ithaca working with first-year residence hall programs; the Ithaca Seminar program; and new student programs. She served on the First-Year Experience Coordinating Committee and has been networking to find ways to cultivate success for all first-year students on campus. This summer she will teach a course on academic success for the Academic Enrichment Services/Office of Multicultural Affairs' 2008 Summer Institute.

Starting in fall 2008, Beth will work with AES director Yolanda Clarke to implement and supervise peer tutoring activities for psychology, music, and biology. Plans are also underway to work with the Ithaca Seminar program, bringing "student success programming" to Ithaca participants.
