Phoebe Constantinou, assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education, presented a paper, entitled "Enhancing Your Physical Education Program Using a Tactical Approach" at the fourth International Conference on Health, Fitness, and Active Living in Athens, Greece, on May 9, 2008.
Organized by the Athens Institute for Education and Research, the conference focused on topics from the disciplines of health and physical education and sport sciences. Participants from 15 European countries, United States, Canada, and Australia contributed papers at the conference.
Professor Constantinou's paper discusses how such a tactical approach to teaching physical education could have a positive impact on students and physical education teachers, and on the overall school's curriculum outcomes.
The paper pointed out that the tactical approach develops students' critical-thinking skills through problem-solving situations and increases their motivation and participation levels. Furthermore, teachers become more enthusiastic about teaching middle and high school students physical education using this approach.
