President Thomas Rochon announces the formation of an Academic Roundtable that will develop ideas on ways to further build upon the tradition of excellence in the educational mission of Ithaca College.

This is a period of rapid growth of knowledge about how people learn, and of rapid change in technology that makes possible new pedagogies. We therefore need to think carefully about how we will take advantage of opportunities to become more effective as a community of learners in a comprehensive, residential college.

The Academic Roundtable will meet periodically during the fall semester, examining key challenges and best practices in higher education as found at Ithaca College and elsewhere. Early in the spring semester, the Academic Roundtable will prepare a brief report on its thoughts and conclusions. The most promising of those ideas will feed into the strategic visioning process that IC will undertake during the 2008-9 academic year. If there are any specific action steps related to curriculum or academic procedure that come from the Academic Roundtable's thinking, they will be sent to the appropriate faculty governance bodies for review and recommendation.

The Academic Roundtable will be composed of President Rochon, Provost Rountree, and eight to ten members of the faculty. Interested faculty should send President Rochon ([mailto:president@ithaca.edu]) an e-mail with a statement of interest and a brief description of the relevant background qualifications or perspectives they would bring to the group. Please send this e-mail by Monday, September 8. The Academic Roundtable will begin meeting approximately mid-September.
