About Howard A. Rodman
Rodman is a screenwriter, novelist, and educator. He is professor and former chair of the writing division at the USC School of Cinematic Arts; a member of the board of directors of the Writers Guild of America, west; and an artistic director of the Sundance Institute Screenwriting Labs.
His films include Savage Grace, starring Julianne Moore, and August, with Josh Hartnett, Rip Torn, and David Bowie -- both films had their U.S. debuts at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Both were released theatrically in 2008, from IFC and First Look, respectively.
Rodman also wrote Joe Gould's Secret, which opened the 2000 Sundance festival and was subsequently released by October/USA Films. Rodman's original screenplay, F., was selected by Premiere magazine as one of "Hollywood's ten best unproduced screenplays."
He has worked with David Lynch, John McTiernan, Rodrigo Garcia, Errol Morris, Clive Barker, Peter Bogdanovich, Maurice Sendak, Michael Lehmann, Chantal Akerman, and Steven Soderbergh (who repaid the favor by giving the name of "Mr. Rodman" to two of the sleazier characters in The Underneath and Traffic.)
For the small screen Rodman most recently wrote a one-hour dramatic pilot for HBO, entitled 213, produced by Soderbergh, George Clooney, and Grant Heslov.
Rodman also wrote several episodes of the Showtime series Fallen Angels and the pilot for the Showtime series The Hunger. These garnered Cable ACE best director nominations for Steven Soderbergh and Tony Scott, a best writer nomination for himself, and a best actress Emmy nomination for Bonnie Bedelia.
Starting as editor-in-chief of the Cornell Daily Sun, Rodman has published scores of articles in venues including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles magazine, and the Village Voice (for which he was a monthly columnist). He currently blogs for the Huffington Post.
He has been a guest on radio shows nationwide; on the PBS Lehrer NewsHour; and on Elvis Mitchell's The Treatment.
He founded and continues to chair the Writers Guild Independent Film Writers Committee. He served for ten years on the board of the Independent Feature Project (now FilmIndependent). He sits on the board of advisers of the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, National University of Ireland, Galway. He also served on the seed fund board of the Liberty Hill Foundation, and continues on the board of Cornell in Hollywood.
He last year chaired FilmIndependent's Spirit Awards feature film jury, which chooses the recipients of the televised Spirit Awards. He also chaired the 2007 Scripter Awards, which honors the best adaptation of a literary work.
