Christopher Dyer '92, director of the Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Affairs in Washington, D.C., will serve as this year's National Coming Out Day speaker. Dyer's talk will take place on Monday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. in Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall.

Each year our campus hosts a featured speaker -- usually with ties to the local community -- in commemoration of National Coming Out Day. In past years, highlighted speakers have include notable people in the fields of research, writing, the arts, advocacy and activism, and law and public policy.

Featured speaker Christopher Dyer is an Ithaca College alumnus, and the director for the mayor's Office of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Affairs in the District of Columbia government. In this position, he is the primary liaison to the LGBT community for the mayor's administration, and is the lead adviser on LGBT policy for the city.

The Office of GLBT Affairs is a permanent, cabinet-level office within the Executive Office of the Mayor, established to address the important concerns of the District's gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender residents. Dyer also serves the city as a human rights commissioner.

In 1997, Dyer founded the Youth Pride Alliance, an organization for LGBTQ youth and their supporters. He has served on ten Capital Pride planning committees and as a member of former mayor Anthony Williams's GLBT Advisory Committee. In 2001, Dyer received the Gene Frey Award for Excellence in Volunteering from the Whitman-Walker Clinic and, in 2003, he was named a "Capital Pride Hero" for his outstanding contributions to the LGBT community.

Dyer's appearance is sponsored by the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, Services; it is free and open to the public.
