The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen film series will offer a showing of Trembling Before G-d, a documentary on Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, on Thursday, October 23. The screening, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Textor 102.
Trembling Before G-d shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality, and religion. The film portrays a group of people who face the profound dilemma of how to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism with prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. It examines a range of complex individuals -- the world's first openly gay Orthodox rabbi; closeted and married Hasidic gays and lesbians; those abandoned by religious families; and Orthodox lesbian high-school sweethearts.
The film has garnered numerous honors, including a Teddy Award for best documentary at the 2001 Berlin Film Festival and the 2003 Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award for best documentary.
Sponsored by the Ithaca College Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services, the film series this year will explore sexual orientation and identity through the lens of faith. The series will present a total of eight films during the fall semester; additional screenings will take place this spring. All are free and open to the public.
