Steven Seidman, associate professor and chair of the Department of Strategic Communication, presented a paper, "The Visual Design of Election Campaign Posters," on October 17 at the annual conference of the International Visual Literacy Association.
The paper explores the visual design principles illustrated in campaign posters used in democratic elections, beginning in the early nineteenth century. The main trends in poster design for most of the twentieth century were simplification and stylization. Political poster designers tried to conceive distinctive styles and powerful visuals, used text sparingly, and arranged elements to attract attention.
The paper includes some excerpts from Seidman's book, Posters, Propaganda, and Persuasion around the World and through History, as well as additional material on visual literacy and the 2008 U.S. presidential election campaign.
Seidman also was elected vice president of the organization at the conference.
