Assistant professor Cory Young, of the Department of Strategic Communication, has authored a book chapter entitled, "Out and Studying Abroad: Unique Challenges to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Students," which was published in Educational Access and Social Justice: A Global Perspective, a book edited by Gowri Parameswaran and Themina Kader.
According to Young, "Social justice educators and activists concerned with sexuality have been committed to eradicating oppression, homophobia, and injustices aimed at gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students within institutions of higher education. The focus, though, primarily has been contained within the classroom, leaving other institutional spaces under investigated, namely study-abroad programs."
Young's chapter addresses the unique challenges that LGBT students face when studying abroad; it also showcases those study-abroad programs that exhibit social justice.
She adds, "I would like to acknowledge Eun Jeong Koh, my research assistant, who was invaluable in terms of finding articles and resources for me."
Young teaches in the communication management and design (CMD) program, including courses on crisis communication, government and stakeholder relations, and international communication.
