The Office of Residential Life will be offering a new specialty housing option for fall 2009.

A pilot of a gender neutral housing community will be offered on the second floor of the West Tower. Students electing to live in gender neutral housing will be able to live with the roommate of their choice – regardless of their gender. Additionally, the bathroom on the floor will also be gender neutral. The bathroom will be renovated over the summer to create greater visual privacy for all students using the facility.

As some returning students may know, the Office of Residential Life attempted to pilot this housing option last spring, however did not gain the interest necessary to move forward. We are pleased to pilot this option again for this year and hope enough interest is generated to help Gender Neutral Housing be successful. We believe this housing option will address the needs of students who want to live in a community that is supportive of all sexual orientations and gender identities, students who want to live in a location where they do not have to identify a gender in order to use the restroom facilities, and students who choose to live with friend regardless of their gender identity.

Students interested in living in gender neutral housing can apply to do so by completing a short application in the Office of Residential Life. Applications will be available beginning January 21st and are due by February 3, 2009. Spaces on the floor will be awarded to students who sign the community agreement, in semester standing order.
