On November 10, Ithaca College received the Sustainability Leadership Award from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Ithaca College won in the category of four-year and graduate institutions with enrollments of 1,001 to 7,500 full-time students. Provost Kathleen Rountree was on hand to accept the award from AASHE executive director Judy Walton.
Our Ithaca College team attended the AASHE conference to also share some of our success stories with our peer institutions. The following members of the Ithaca College community presented at the conference, held in Raleigh NC from November 9-11.
"Education for Sustainability and Designing for Significant Learning" was presented by Tina Nilsen-Hodges, lecturer in Environmental Studies, EcoVillage at Ithaca resident, founding principal of the New Roots Charter School, and member of the Partnerships in Sustainability Education steering committee.
"Doing Local Environmental History: Developing a Sense of Place and Ecological Citizenship was presented by Dr. Michael Smith from the department of History, and his students Anthony Veroline '11 and Sarah Brylinsky '08, who were joined by former student Ross Schaner, now studying at the Fashion Institute of New York. All three students spoke about their participation in class projects in Smith's "History of U.S. Environmental Thought" course, which partners students with archivists at the History Center of Tompkins County to use primary source material at the Center to research local environmental history stories.
"Show Me the Money: Resources for Campus Sustainability Programs" was presented by Marian Brown, special assistant to the Provost. Brown also presented a poster titled "Developing a Sustainable Campus: A Tale of Two Buildings" on behalf of Rick Couture, associate vice president of Facilities, and the two architect teams from Robert A.M. Stern and HOLT Architects, respectively, that worked on the Park Center and Gateway LEED Platinum projects. Brown was also a participant in a panel discussion titled "Boldly Sustainable: Developing a Town-Gown Climate Action Plan in Ithaca NY" along with a representative from Cornell and other local partners.
Dr. Jason Hamilton from the Biology department presented on "Ithaca College's Finger Lakes Project".
Dr. Kathryn Caldwell from the Psychology department presented on "Teaching Sustainability through an Interdisciplinary Learning Exchange".
Dr. Susan Allen-Gil from Biology department and coordinator of the Environmental Studies program presented "Ithaca College's New Commit-to-Change Initiative".
Paige Davis '09 presented on "Ithaca College's Greenhouse Gas Emissions."
Dr. Tom Pfaff from the department of Mathematics presented "Running the Numbers: Enhancing Calculus through Education about Sustainability".
Also attending the conference with the Ithaca College delegation were Nancy Jacobson from Biology and Mark Darling, supervisor of Recycling and Resource Management for Facilities.
