Canadian Indie-pop band STARS will arrive in Ithaca at the State Theatre on Friday, February 6. This will be the first co-presentation between Dan Smalls Presents and both local colleges- The Cornell Concert Commission AND the Ithaca College Bureau of Concerts. It will be a sign of the solidarity that exists in the local music scene and all three organizations will share in the risk and responsibilities of presenting the show.
Student tickets will go on sale on Friday January 23rd via both colleges - University Tickets at Cornell University and the Rec Center at Ithaca College for $17.50. It is a reserved seating event and equal quantities of great seats are allotted to each of the three presenting organizations. A special guest will be added in the coming days.
In Our Bedroom After the War, the name of Stars' fourth, newest – and, without question, best – full-length album, is mysterious, grand, and multi-faceted. Which is fitting, because the 13 marvelous songs collected under that name are as well. Each and every one of them. Originally formed in Toronto by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman, the band relocated to New York City and then subsequently to Montreal. Stars' music has been described as beautiful, eloquent indie pop, characterized by lush instrumentation, nimble production and mixing, narrative lyrics, and soft but nuanced vocals. The band's style has evolved from an electronic-pop sound as heard on Nightsongs to more rock-based instrumentation on their last two full-length albums, reflecting the permanent additions of singer-guitarist Amy Millan and bassist Evan Cranley on Heart, and eventually drummer Pat McGee on Set Yourself on Fire. Millan, Cranley and Campbell are also members of the indie band Broken Social Scene, with whom they currently share a record label, Arts & Crafts. Campbell is also an actor and has appeared on the television shows Sex and the City and Law and Order.
