"The Body Project: Why the Obsession?"
Monday, February 16
7:00 p.m., Klingenstein Lounge
Joan Jacobs Brumberg, social historian and author of The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls and Fasting Girls: The History of Anorexia Nervosa
America's adolescent girls are in crisis. Growing up in a female body is more difficult today than ever before. Girls' bodies have changed and so has American society. Using intimate materials drawn from the unpublished diaries of American girls, Joan Jacob Brumberg’s presentation of "The Body Project" provides a lively and engaging story of how growing up as a girl has changed over the past century, and why the pressures on girls and young women are now so intense.
This event is cosponsored by the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, Health Promotion program, history department, and the women’s studies program, in observance of Eating Disorders Awareness Month.
