J. Daniel Jenkins, assistant professor of music theory and affiliate faculty member in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of South Carolina, will present a lecture, " 'What a Label Refers To': Identity and Ambiguity in the Undergraduate Theory Classroom," on Friday, February 20, at 4:15 p.m. in Whalen 2105 (Iger Lecture Hall).
The lecture involves a discussion of how musical harmonies are labeled in various undergraduate textbooks, and how the meanings of those labels can be interpreted through the lens of contemporary gender studies. The presentation is free and open to the public. No prior knowledge of music theory is required.
J. Daniel Jenkins holds a Ph.D. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music. His research has been supported by the Presser Foundation and the Austrian-American Education Commission.
