The inaugural winners of the Izzy Award for special achievement in independent media will be honored in a ceremony on Tuesday, March 31, at the State Theatre in downtown Ithaca. Democracy Now! host/executive producer Amy Goodman and www.ithaca.edu/indy/izzyblogger Glenn Greenwald will each speak at the event, which is being held at 7:00 p.m. The award ceremony is free and open to the public, though tickets are required.
Free tickets may be picked up at the Ithaca College Campus Center or the State Theatre box office. Located at 105 W. State Street, the State Theatre box office is open Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and before performances from two hours prior to showtime until a half hour past curtain. The IC ticket office, located in the recreation center on the first floor of Campus Center, is open Monday through Friday, 12:10 to 6:00 p.m.
In addition to speaking at the ceremony, Goodman and Greenwald will sign copies of their books.
The event coincides with the paperback release of Goodman’s most recent book, Standing up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times. Greenwald’s books include the New York Times bestseller How Would a Patriot Act? Defending American Values From a President Run Amok.
The Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM) at Ithaca College created the Izzy Award to recognize independent outlets, journalists or producers for work created and distributed outside of traditional corporate structures. It is named for the legendary muckraking journalist I.F. "Izzy" Stone, who exposed government deceit and corruption while championing civil liberties, racial justice and international diplomacy. Stone passed away in 1989; his son Jeremy will be on hand for the award ceremony and will offer brief remarks.
Greenwald is a former constitutional lawyer who started blogging in 2005, acting as his own editor/publisher in the I.F. Stone tradition. In 2007 he moved his blog to Salon.com, retaining full editorial freedom. Week after week, in meticulously documented and detailed blog posts, he skewers hypocrisy, deception and revisionism on the part of the powers that be in government and the media.
Over the past 12 years, Amy Goodman has built "Democracy Now!" into the largest public media collaboration -- it can be found on television, radio and the Internet -- in the country. Independent of any party or sponsor in the I.F. Stone tradition, "Democracy Now!" offers a daily cutting-edge broadcast featuring issues, experts and debates rarely heard in corporate media, including the voices of both policymakers and those affected by policy.
Based in the Roy H. Park School of Communications, the PCIM was launched in 2008 as a national center for the study of media outlets that create and distribute content outside traditional corporate systems and news organizations.
